APTA PPS Conference Recap

Introduction

This year, I attended the PPS conference as a member of the FIGUR8 team. Unlike previous years, I was not leading a group of clinics, which allowed me to broaden my perspective and approach the event with a wider lens.

Networking and Reconnection

The conference provided the usual opportunity to reconnect with dedicated private practice members and thought leaders. The attendees included both seasoned veterans and many newcomers, all united in their pursuit of meaningful innovation within the field.

Innovation in Healthcare and Physical Therapy

There is a clear need for innovation in healthcare and physical therapy. However, it is essential to remain discerning about the intentions behind new developments and to conduct careful due diligence. The focus should be on identifying what truly enhances efficiency and what brings greater meaning to our work, particularly in demonstrating the impact we have on musculoskeletal (MSK) health.

The Role of Physical Therapists

As physical therapists, we are experts in movement, specializing in diagnosing, treating, and restoring function. It is imperative to establish an MSK data standard that is objective, precise, and standardized. At the same time, we must ensure that implementing such standards does not add to the already significant workload of clinicians.

Collaborative Spirit and Industry Challenges

The conference consistently attracts individuals who are eager to identify and collaborate on the key issues and challenges facing our profession and industry. This year, there was a noticeable resurgence of optimism and engagement, which replaced the discouraging outlook that had prevailed during recent years of significant headwinds for the profession.

Shifting to Value-Based Care

Many discussions centered on the transition from volume-based care to value-based models. This shift necessitates a clear definition of MSK value and demands innovative approaches that support value for all stakeholders involved.

Technology and Its Impact

Technology was a prominent presence at the conference, with numerous "AI-driven practice tools" claiming to automate various aspects of practice. As someone who has embraced innovation, my key takeaway is that while these tools may improve efficiency, the primary goal should be MSK technology that effectively demonstrates the impact we have on patients and other MSK stakeholders.

Data Collection and Application

Although collecting data has become easier, the real challenge lies in interpreting it correctly and applying it within the proper context. Precision and accuracy are important, but without true understanding, data remains merely numbers on a screen. Data only becomes meaningful when it is precise, accurate, contextualized, and applied with a clear purpose.
